CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY?

I was first diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer when I was 33 in March 2020. I was living a seemingly normal life, sharing a house with two girlfriends and working full time in travel so this all came as a huge shock to me. Only a few months prior I had returned from Nepal trekking with my father. The only symptom I had was blood in my stool, my GP at the time put that down to tearing and said to come back in three weeks if it had not improved. Luckily I had an appointment with my gynaecologist regarding my endometriosis and mentioned it to him and he did an internal examination and felt the tumour, within days my life had completely turned upside down. I moved back home so I had someone to help care for me and begun pelvic radiation and 12 rounds chemotherapy. I also had an operation to remove the main tumour, but unfortunately, it had spread to my lungs, since then I have been on two different trials and had more radiation on my lungs and been dealing with symptoms from medical menopause. Unfortunately, due to the radiation and chemo, it’s likely I will not be able to carry a child. I was able to go through the egg freezing process and have some eggs in the freezer and one day I can hopefully use to become a Mumma. Infertility is not generally spoken about or highlighted in the cancer journey, it’s definitely something I am grieving through and very much having to surrender to. I’m currently back on chemotherapy and after my forth round will have a scan to see where we are at.

CAN YOU SHARE A STORY OF A TIME WHEN YOU FELT PARTICULARLY EMPOWERED DURING YOUR JOURNEY?

I created a “bucket list” of sorts and I have had some absolutely amazing experiences with my family and friends ticking things off. I also was so grateful to be a part of the NH co photo shoot with some absolutely gorgeous ladies. I really felt so lucky and empowered that day. Body image is something I have struggled with along my journey and the ladies certainly made me feel beautiful and empowered.

WHO IS A WOMAN THAT INSPIRES YOU & WHY? HOW HAS HER INFLUENCE IMPACTED YOUR JOURNEY?

I’d have to say my best friend Sally. Although we were close before I begun this journey our relationship has become even closer. She’s very in tune to my feelings and always knows just what to say and do. She inspires me daily with the way she fearlessly lives her life. I look up to her as a mother, wife and friend. She is incredibly loyal and I know she would always have my back. When I am having a dark day I know I can count on her to pop up with flowers or just a text saying “one day at a time”.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE WE CAN DO TO EMPOWER WOMEN, PARTICULARLY THOSE FACING HEALTH CHALLENGES?

Listening and taking action is very important and I think education is the key, whether it be related to something like endometriosis or even cancer. The more awareness around these issues the more woman can become their own advocate for improved care and assistance. Asking questions, speaking up and pushing for answers from health professionals is very important as we are sometimes brushed aside and given false diagnosis. Trust yourself and your body.

HOW DOES THE PRIORITISATION OF YOUR HEALTH & WELLNESS EMPOWER YOU TO LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE?

Since my journey I have really learnt the health is not something to be taken for granted. I now prioritise sleep, movement (even just a walk around the block), yoga and I’m trying my best to fuel my body and practice self care. This could be as little as journaling for a few minutes before bed then reading my dragon fantasy books IYKYK 🤣 I’m very grateful for the moments when I feel well and love to take advantage of them by spending quality time with my friends and family and getting out and ticking items of my list.
