Sleep and Your Cycle: Why Week 3 Can Feel Like It Destroys You

Aug 21, 2026

Have you ever noticed that some weeks you fall asleep effortlessly, while other weeks you're lying awake, waking throughout the night or feeling exhausted even after a full night's sleep?

One of the biggest things I wish more women understood is that our sleep isn't static. It changes throughout our menstrual cycle because our hormones change throughout the month. Yet so many women are told they're "just stressed" or "just anxious", when in reality, their hormones may also be playing a much bigger role than they realise.

Why Sleep Changes During the Luteal Phase

The luteal phase is the second half of your menstrual cycle, beginning after ovulation and ending when your period starts, typically lasting 12–14 days. During this time, progesterone, a hormone that generally has a calming effect on the body, begins to decline if pregnancy doesn't occur. At the same time, your core body temperature naturally rises slightly. While these changes are completely normal, they can make it harder to achieve deep, restorative sleep.

You might notice yourself:

  • taking longer to fall asleep
  • waking more frequently throughout the night
  • feeling hotter than usual in bed
  • waking earlier than expected
  • feeling more tired, emotional or overwhelmed the following day

These changes in your sleep do not mean anything is "wrong" with your body. Rather, your body is moving through a natural hormonal transition that can influence how rested you feel.

Supporting Yourself Instead of Pushing Through

Many women expect themselves to function exactly the same every day of the month, but our bodies aren't designed that way. Instead of fighting your cycle, what would it be like to work with it?

During the luteal phase, this might look like:

  • prioritising regular, balanced meals to support steady energy
  • reducing caffeine later in the day if you're noticing increased sensitivity
  • choosing gentle movement like walking, stretching, yoga or Pilates instead of high-intensity or cardio-heavy workouts
  • giving yourself permission to slow your schedule where possible
  • creating a calming evening routine that signals to your body it's time to unwind

Rather than trying to fight the changes happening within your body, these small, supportive habits can help you work with your cycle, creating the conditions for a more restful night sleep.

Supporting Your Body with NU Harvest

Nourishing your body consistently becomes even more important during the second half of your cycle. One way I support myself, especially during my luteal phase, is by starting the day with Nu Harvest Creatine. As energy levels naturally fluctuate throughout this phase of the cycle, creatine supports energy production, making it a simple addition to my morning routine when I'm feeling more fatigued or finding it harder to keep up with the demands of everyday life.

Eating enough protein is another simple way to support your energy and, in turn, your sleep. During the luteal phase, many women notice they feel more bloated or that heavier meals don't sit quite as comfortably. On those days, I often lean towards simple, nourishing meals that feel easier on my digestion, like a warm bowl of porridge or a smoothie with Thrive Plant Protein. With added digestive enzymes and a fibre blend including soluble maize fibre and psyllium husk, it supports comfortable digestion while making it easy to increase my protein intake. It's one of my favourite luteal-phase staples.

As bedtime approaches, creating a calming evening ritual can help support your body's transition into rest, something I find especially helpful during the luteal phase when sleep can feel a little more disrupted. One of my favourite ways to wind down is with a warm cup of Nu Harvest Moon Mylk, while dimming the lights and listening to meditation music in bed. With ingredients including magnesium, passionflower, lemon balm and L-tryptophan, it supports relaxation and has become a simple ritual that helps me work with my body as it prepares for sleep.

Your Cycle Is Something to Befriend

I promise your menstrual cycle is not working against you, it's communicating with you. Rather than expecting your body to feel and perform exactly the same every week, try becoming curious about the patterns you're noticing.

When do you sleep best? When do you need more rest? When do you naturally have more energy?

The more we understand our hormonal rhythms, the more compassion we can have for ourselves and the more we can build in support to help our body function better!

If you're looking to support your body, sleep and energy throughout your cycle, Creatine, Thrive Plant Protein and Moon Mylk can become simple additions to your routine that support your energy and evening wind-down.
