HASTA Certification: What It Actually Means for Athletes

Jul 21, 2026

For recreational gym-goers, this may not be a major concern. But for elite, sub-elite and drug-tested athletes, choosing a supplement isn't just about whether or not it will provide performance benefit, but it's about ensuring it's free from substances that could result in an anti-doping violation.

That's where HASTA certification comes in.

Why Third-Party Testing Matters

Supplements aren't regulated to the same standard as prescription medications. While reputable brands have strict quality control processes, contamination can still occur during manufacturing or through raw ingredients.

Under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) strict liability principle, athletes are responsible for every substance found in their body, even if it was consumed unintentionally through a contaminated supplement.

That's why I encourage athletes to look beyond the nutrition panel and choose products that have undergone independent third-party testing.

What Is HASTA?

HASTA (Human and Supplement Testing Australia) is an independent Australian testing program that batch tests supplements for substances prohibited under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code.

The important distinction is that HASTA doesn't simply approve a product once. Individual production batches are tested before certification, providing athletes with greater confidence that the supplement they're purchasing has been screened for banned substances.

While no testing program can guarantee zero risk, batch testing significantly reduces the likelihood of inadvertent contamination.

Why Is This Especially Important for Plant-Based Supplements?

Plant-based sports nutrition has grown enormously in recent years, with more athletes choosing vegan proteins for health, sustainability or dietary preferences.

However, it's still relatively uncommon to find plant-based protein powders that are independently batch tested.

Many plant-based supplements are made using ingredients sourced from multiple suppliers, creating more opportunities for contamination if manufacturing standards aren't tightly controlled. This doesn't mean plant proteins are unsafe, but it does make quality assurance even more important, particularly for athletes competing in tested sport.

My Perspective as a Sports Dietitian

Food should always form the foundation of an athlete's nutrition plan, and supplements should only be used to fill gaps or provide convenience when whole foods aren't practical.

When I do recommend a protein supplement, I look for more than just protein content. I consider the quality of the ingredients, whether the product suits the athlete's goals, and importantly, whether it has undergone independent batch testing.

That's one reason I recommend the Nu Harvest Performance range, including the Performance Protein, Pre-Workout and Electrolytes. Not only are they formulated with evidence-based ingredients to support performance and recovery such as glutamine, L-carnitine and magnesium, but they're also HASTA batch tested. For athletes competing under anti-doping regulations, that additional level of quality assurance provides valuable peace of mind, allowing them to focus on their performance with confidence.

The Bottom Line

Whether you're competing at an elite level or simply taking your training seriously, choosing products that have been independently batch tested is one of the simplest ways to reduce unnecessary risk.

Performance is built through months and years of consistent training. Protecting that hard work starts with knowing exactly what's going into your body.
